What to do when your parent needs help from a nursing home?

It is a difficult moment when you realize that your mother or father needs the help of a nursing home. Our parents take care of us all our lives, but there comes a time when we have to take care of them and love them back.

Do your parents need the help of a nursing home?

You may take care of your parents in your own home for a while, and you may not be able to do so. Your children or your parents are preventing you. Many families seek the help of a nursing home as a form of advanced care for their loved ones who can no longer care for themselves.

In an ideal scenario, your parents will be fully involved in the search. However, if your loved one is unable to make decisions due to an illness (such as Alzheimer’s or dementia), you will be the decision maker.

If your parents need the help of a nursing home, perhaps these few steps will help you make a decision.

1. Involve them in decision-making

The more involved they are, the easier it will be for your parents to find what they want. It’s true that you can’t do much for them, but talking about their wishes can help a lot.

2. Make a budget decision

Unfortunately, money will be one of the factors in the search for a home for the elderly. Consider what your family can afford on a monthly basis. Some families may need the help of older children or may even consider selling family properties and the like.

3. Start looking for a home for the elderly and infirm

Looking at pictures, brochures or reading the experiences of other users will not help you as much as visiting a nursing home alone. Arrange a visit to at least three different nursing homes. And if you have the energy and time, look at up to six homes. Based on impressions, decide on two or three favorites. Then revisit those homes to help you make a better decision.

4. Make the final decision

Whether it’s your parent choosing the home or you on their behalf, make sure everyone in your family is on board with the decision. If possible, talk to your parents about each option and make a decision together.

5. Moving to a home for the elderly and infirm

If you get to this step, there is no reason to delay the move. It is risky to delay while your parent needs help. Any delay can lead to accidents and medical problems.
